A FAMILY BUSINESS FOR FAMILIES – A FAMILY FOR FAMILIES

Let us introduce ourselves. We are Ales and Veronika, the parents of Matjaz, the owners of the dog Emi and the founders of the company SemEko.si. All of us love being in nature. We live and breathe with it, in each season in its own way. The warm sun draws us all year round to the island of Hvar, or at least reminds us of it, of its scents, its magic and its beautiful sea. We visit the island with enthusiasm every year, usually several times a year, if time allows.
Lavender, oregano, rosemary, sage, laurel and the sea never let us out of their embrace and have left a deep mark on us. Above all that first plant: “Lavender”. In the summer months we have a lot of work with it. We harvest it ourselves, dry it, clean it, sort it and then bring it home. It was precisely this longing for the sun and this scent of summer that gave rise to the joint story of spelt and lavender. It was love at first sight. Later, buckwheat joined them too.
We began making “fragrant” natural cushions of all shapes five years ago. Ales worked in the chemical industry for many years. Our wish was that his new work would take him away from chemistry and that we would start making useful, natural, beautiful and playful products for all generations. When we became parents, we looked for simple, practical and natural products for Matjaz’s needs, but they simply were not available on the market. We thought about products that would be friendly to babies. We started with a nursing pillow, added a spelt pillow, and made a mat for a travel cot that could be used for sleeping or as a play mat. Another great challenge in the summer months was Matjaz’s constantly sweaty back. We had problems when we carried him in the car in a baby carrier and later in a car seat. Matjaz’s needs and the care for his comfort were a great challenge for us, and he was a great inspiration.
Ideas then came of their own accord, according to the needs and wishes of our family and friends. In this way we designed products that serve not only children but also us adults: pillows, cushions for sitting in the office, cushions for car seats, yoga cushions, mattress toppers for sleeping, cushions for people in wheelchairs and more.
. Our dog Emi also enjoyed the comfort of spelt cushions. She got her own dog bed, on which she feels very comfortable and sleeps very well. Sometimes in the morning it does not even occur to her to get up and go outside.
Our wish is to create quality natural products in lively, cheerful colours that can be used by everyone, young and old alike.

WHEN TRADITION AND INNOVATION COME TOGETHER

Can innovation grow out of tradition?
We strive to maintain the fragile balance between the two. With our products we want to return to nature, from which modern life takes us ever further away. It is precisely because of the dangerous substances that we find in everyday life in food, textiles, cleaning agents and detergents, both at home and at the workplace, that we wanted to make products that contain no artificial and dangerous substances. This seemed especially important to us for sleep, to which we devote a great deal of our lives.
A great deal of manual work goes into the creation of our products. The products are made entirely in Slovenia. The spelt and buckwheat husks come from Slovenian farms that have obtained certification for organic production. In choosing raw materials we ensure high quality and regular checks. The products are distributed to more than 30 stores throughout Slovenia.
